Buenos días, saludo a Los lectores de Al Poniente desde las oficinas de la DNTIC de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia en la ciudad de Bogotá, ente administrativo que maneja y regula los asuntos institucionales relacionados con las tecnologías de información y las comunicaciones y que permiten a la comunidad universitaria tener vigencia en un mundo cambiante y a su vez impredecible.
A raíz del documento “Querer – creer- vislumbrar, lo virtual hoy” quise hacer una reflexión sobre la tarea de la docencia en el 2014, donde el profesor se enfrenta a unos estudiantes que lo miran como a un sapo raro porque creen que no es capaz de interpretar ni su lenguaje, ni sus intereses, ni su costumbre de navegar por el ciberespacio, ni su manera de relacionarse con centenares de amigos que tal vez nunca van a tener físicamente al frente.
El autor, el profesor Fabián Sanabria, plantea que los jóvenes hoy se encuentran con “enormes posibilidades de conectividad que, al extender las ciudades, nos obliga a replantear las relaciones entre interioridad y exterioridad, identidad y alteridad hoy”.
Varios profesores de mi generación han renunciado a sus cátedras porque “no entienden a estos jóvenes, dispersos e inmersos en las pantallas de sus dispositivos móviles” dado que son “despreocupados, insolentes y desatentos”, ante sus discursos que otrora atraían a los estudiantes que sí se interesaban en sus clases.
Cuando yo era estudiante de ingeniería, en los setentas, la vida era muy distinta y hoy pareciera como si hubieran pasado varios siglos: no existían la fotocopiadora, ni el télex, ni la calculadora electrónica, ni las impresoras láser; la televisión era en blanco y negro y como sólo había dos canales a nadie se ocurrió inventar el control del televisor, lo único que manejan hoy los esposos en los hogares colombianos; no existía el video beam y apenas aparecía el retroproyector de acetatos para los profesores con problemas de motricidad; nadie se imaginaba que llegarían a nuestras vidas el Windows, y mucho menos el internet y la telefonía celular.
El computador de mi universidad tenía una memoria de 32K y funcionaba con tarjetas perforadas IBM, y no llegué a conocer a nadie que hubiera previsto la llegada del ordenador personal.
Las clases eran a punta de tiza y tablero y el profesor era el centro del saber. Quien se atreviera a contradecirlo era un hereje; o alguien con una inteligencia mayor, con el riesgo de no ser comprendido y enviado a la “hoguera” académica. Aquel que se atreviera a faltar a una clase era una especie de suicida, porque así se estaba privando de la información que sólo el profesor le podía proporcionar en el aula.
El profesor-eje-centro-del-saber tenía dos libros, uno para compartir con los estudiantes y otro exclusivo a los que nadie más podía acceder. Esto lo convertía en un todopoderoso del conocimiento del tema del curso que dictaba y lo colocaba en un pedestal casi inalcanzable para los estudiantes.
Por eso quiero contar que cuando uno de mis estudiantes me escuchó esta historia, me dijo: ¿Profesor, cómo pudo usted sobrevivir en ese mundo?
El reto de ser docente hoy pasa por que el profesor entienda que ya no es el centro, puesto que un estudiante universitario tiene un acceso universal a la información por múltiples canales de comunicación. Esto me recuerda la historia de Copérnico cuando le dijo a la humanidad que la tierra ya no era el centro, puesto que no giraba alrededor del sol. Para los jóvenes de hoy el saber es inmediato, manejado por el señor Google, por la señorita Wikipedia, por el maestro Youtube y por el doctor TED. (Y desde una perspectiva académica más formal, las nuevas generaciones tienen acceso a las mejores librerías del mundo y a las bases de datos de las revistas de carácter científico, con sólo hacer un “click” en su Smartphone o en su Tablet).
Además los jóvenes de hoy viven en el hogar Facebook, rumbean en la taberna Twitter y guardan toda su historia de vida e imágenes en su urbanización Instagram. Se enamoran y comprometen a través de la Celestina de apellido Messenger. Cuando envían mensajes personalizados, sin acceso para padres y mayores, recurren a su revista de historietas wetransfer, (el mensaje se destruye a los treinta segundos). Y todos sus archivos académicos los “suben a la nube” a través de las zonas libres de Dropbox o Skydrive.
