¿Cómo solucionar todo este embrollo?… De buenas a primeras, seguro muchos de nosotros ya nos habríamos desanimado y echado nuestro proyecto a la basura. Afortunadamente, hoy existen opciones alternativas para sacar nuestras ideas adelante. Una de ellas –y quizás la más importante- es Cloud Computing (“Computación en la nube”)… un término que se ha puesto bastante de moda entre geeks y techs, pero que para el usuario común puede sonar todavía un poco indescifrable… Es por eso, que nos reunimos con Vladimir Vivar y José Luis Martínez, gerentes de Applying Consulting, expertos en este tipo de tecnología, para que nos expliquen un poco sobre el significado de esta expresión, y de las ventajas que supone.
¿Qué es “Computación en la Nube”?
En palabras simples, podríamos decir que se trata de un inmenso servidor ubicado en Internet, donde podemos encontrar infinidad de aplicaciones. La “nube” es la palabra asociada a Internet y “aplicación”, vendría a ser lo mismo que un software, sólo que en lugar de hallarse en tu computadora, se encuentra flotando en Internet. Esta “pequeña diferencia” en la teoría, resulta ser una inmensa ventaja en la práctica. Para empezar, el hecho de que las aplicaciones en la nube, puedan ser de almacenamiento, de servicio, de comunicación, etc., te independiza de un equipo específico para acceder a tu información y gestionarla. Un buen ejemplo de ello es Google Drive, que está en internet y te permite redactar documentos, guardar fotos, videos, e inclusive realizar presentaciones u hojas de cálculo. Al ser un servicio online, puedes acceder a él desde cualquier lugar y desde cualquier dispositivo (¡hasta de tu celular!). También vuelve irrelevante el tipo de sistema operativo que utilices (sea Windows, Macintosh, Linux o Android).
Hasta aquí, ya tenemos un importante ahorro de tiempo, que podemos utilizar en otras cuestiones importantes de la empresa (y traducirlo en dinero). Pero ésta no es la única ventaja que tiene Cloud Computing. Concretamente, utilizarlo también significa un ahorro de recursos. ¿Por qué? Porque, para empezar, ya no necesitas preocuparte por obtener, cada cierto tiempo, un hardware adecuado para soportar los programas. Tampoco por utilizar un mismo equipo, lo cual le quitaría desgaste, y por lo tanto, resta depreciación. Al mismo tiempo, el mantenimiento de los programas ya no correría por cuenta de la empresa, pues todo lo que está en la nube se actualiza y se corrige automáticamente y a toda hora. Por si fuera poco, muchas aplicaciones hoy en día son gratuitas, y las que no lo son, implican un costo mensual bastante moderado, a comparación de los tremendos costos, difíciles de anticipar, que involucran la utilización de los clásicos programas almacenados en el servidor de la empresa.
¿Ahora, qué sucede con el tema de la seguridad?
Seguramente, la próxima duda en la mente de nuestros lectores más escépticos será: “Si no tengo toda mi información concretamente en mis manos, ¿cómo puedo garantizar que no será utilizada por otros para malos fines?”. Este tipo de duda, es natural, pero al prestarle demasiada atención, es posible que esté pasando por alto los problemas de seguridad adicionales, que uno enfrenta al apegarse a los procedimientos tradicionales.
Es cierto que la información se almacena en un espacio que no vemos, y que no hay clave de seguridad 100% invulnerable (aunque cada vez cuentan con mayores refuerzos); pero también es verdad que, hoy en día, ninguna empresa puede prescindir de Internet, y que, en cualquier página que naveguemos, nos puede sorprender algún virus, hacker o programa espía. De ocurrir esto, nuestra información igualmente podría ser robada, alterada, o incluso eliminada de manera permanente (eso sin contar un robo real de los equipos).
Al almacenar nuestra información en la nube y considerar los estándares de seguridad recomendados, nuestro contenido corre menos riesgo. Las posibilidades de que la nube sufra percances irreversibles son prácticamente nulas (los equipos que controlan todo este universo se encuentran en una infraestructura especial, altamente resistente incluso a desastres naturales), y el riesgo de que las personas encargadas de gestionar la información no sean confiables, tampoco es ajeno al entorno de nuestra propia empresa. Al tener que contratar personal que administre la información –dentro de nuestro propio espacio-, también nos arriesgamos a que ésta sea empleada de manera incorrecta.
En todo caso, una medida que sí consideramos fundamental para asegurar nuestro contenido, es saber seleccionar adecuadamente el servicio que se va a utilizar. Applying Consulting recomienda trabajar con empresas líderes y de reconocimiento evidente, como lo son Google y Amazon.
Hay temores que no podemos erradicar del todo, pero sí minimizar; en contraste, asumir ciertos riesgos podría, no sólo restarnos costos y generar un aumento de la eficiencia; también darnos la posibilidad de sacar adelante proyectos con los que, en otras circunstancias, ni siquiera podríamos soñar. Como dice Mark Zuckerberg: “el mayor riesgo en la vida es no tomar ningún riesgo”.
