«Y de pronto me pareció… digno»

“Eran los años 80-84, cuando era el problema de la droga en Barcelona, y me acuerdo perfectamente que caminaba por la calle y un tipo de aspecto penoso, lamentable, una auténtica ruina humana, se me acerca y me dice ‘oye, dame algo’. Estaba completamente llevado de las drogas, un desastre. No le hice caso, pero entonces entonces de pronto me coge el brazo y me dice ‘Oye tio, no me des nada, ¿eh? Pero mírame a la cara, ¿vale?’. Entonces me di cuenta que entre toda la miseria que tenía, me decía ‘ya sé que soy una mierda, ya sé que no soy nada, pero mírame a la cara’. Y de pronto me dí cuenta de que uno puede ser sin querer miserable, porque aquel tipo era un ser humano, y luego pensé que era seguramente más digno que otros mucho más presentables, elegantes y ejemplares; porque de pronto sabía cosas que yo no podría jamás saber y tenía una experiencia que yo no podía jamás imaginarme. “It was during the 80’s- year 84, when there was a big drug problem in Barcelona, and I remember perfectly that I was walking down the street and a guy with the most shameful, grievous aspect -an authentical human wreck- comes up to me and says ‘hey, give me something’. He was absolutely lost in drugs, a total disaster. I didn’t pay any attention to him, but suddenly he grabs my arm and is like ‘Hey, dude, don’t give me anything, ok? But at least look me in the eyes, ok?’. So then I realized that in the midst of his misery, he was saying ‘I know I’m a piece of shit, I know I mean nothing, but look me in the eyes’. And suddenly I realized how miserable one can be without wanting to be miserable, because that man was a human being, and then I thought that he was more worthy than other well-dressed, elegant, exemplary people; because maybe he knew things that I could never know and have experiences that I could never imagine.
