«Me tocó dejar un pedazo de tierrita allá en el campo»

Mis hijas tienen 16 y 18. Por eso las iban a reclutar para la guerra, para hacer con ellas lo que se les diera la gana y después dejarlas en una montaña quién sabe dónde. Me tocó dejar un pedazo de tierrita allá en el campo, y me vine esperanzado por una hermana que vivía en Bello, pero cuando llegamos ella se había ido y no dejó dirección ni manera de localizarla. Gracias a mi dios, a veces logro conseguirme la platica pa’ pagarle la dormida a ellas, y pa’ yo amanecer incluso andando, viendo por ellas y mirando cómo me les consigo el desayuno y la comida del otro día.

My daughters are 16 and 18. They were going to get recruited for the war, to do with them whatever they wanted and then leave them in a mountain who knows where. I had to leave a little piece of land in the countryside, and I came here hoping to find my sister who lived in Bello, but when we arrived she had moved and left no address or way of finding her. Thank god, sometimes I get enough money for my daughters to sleep somewhere, and then I stay in the streets walking, looking out for them and seeing how I can find money for breakfast and the next day’s meal.
