En “La Flaca”, su libro de memorias, Patsy nos introduce en sus aventuras como periodista de investigación, a la vez que nos sumerge en los episodios más terribles que vivió durante aquella época violenta.
Confieso que nunca he sido fan de las crónicas. Soy más una lectora de ficción, quizás porque siempre he considerado que los escritores de este género, al ser más libres, tienden también a ser más creativos a la hora de expresarse. Pero cuando te encuentras con un libro como La Flaca, de Patsy Adolph, te das cuenta de que hay casos en los que la realidad supera a la ficción, y de que un cronista puede tener el mismo talento de un escritor para atrapar al lector con su relato. Patsy, en su narración, es indiscutiblemente divertida, emocionante… y desgarradora… dependiendo de la escena que busque plasmar.
Soy comunicadora. Tengo mi lado periodístico también, pero lo mío va más por el lado del arte… No sé si por intimidación o por simple falta de interés, pero los otros tipos de periodismo –como el político o el policial- nunca habían despertado mi atención. En el fondo, creo percibir en el mundo que exploran, un terreno muy sórdido que tiende a embarrar a quien sea que pise en él. No obstante, el relato de Patsy despertó en mí una repentina fascinación hacia el periodismo de investigación. Está construida de tal manera que atrapa al lector/espectador, poniéndole en los zapatos del periodista, de las intrigas y dilemas morales que puede llegar a enfrentar, de las dificultades que se le presentan en el camino, de las frustraciones que éstas provocan, y de las satisfacciones cuando se superan.
Patsy te hace sentir la adrenalina de estar en el lugar de los hechos, persiguiendo a los asaltantes de una fábrica, aventurándose al interior de las zonas rojas en tiempos del terrorismo, aprendiendo a sobrevivir a desastres naturales. Al leer, uno tiene las ganas de chapar la cámara y hacer lo que ella hace; de aprender también a manejar todo tipo de armas y a saltar en paracaídas. Nos encontramos, pues, frente a una aventurera que se hace admirar.
Pero el valor La Flaca, llamado así por el apodo que tenía Patsy en su juventud, no se limita a solamente a ser un relato emocionante y motivador para quienes llevan la “pasta” de periodista en su interior. También tiene un fuerte valor documental, y es que uno de los temas principales de la crónica, es el pánico que se vivió en el Perú durante las décadas de los 80 y los 90, marcadas por los ataques terroristas de Sendero Luminoso y el MRTA.
Pareciera que hoy en día la gente lucha por borrar toda huella de una época sencillamente horripilante. Otras generaciones simplemente no vivieron la traumática experiencia. Quizás sea normal que uno busque olvidar lo malo de manera instintiva, pero mucho más productivo sería aprender del pasado. Nos guste o no, esos terribles acontecimientos ocurrieron. Vivíamos en una situación de angustia constante en la que la expresión “coche bomba” eran tan común, que hasta los niños de aquel entonces (me incluyo), teníamos un juego en el que todos debíamos correr al grito de alerta de uno de los jugadores (“¡coche bomba, coche bomba, corran!”). Eso no es algo que debería borrarse, porque podría repetirse, y Patsy, con su relato, busca precisamente enfrentarnos con esa realidad cruda, para ponernos a reflexionar sobre por qué se dio, cómo se dio, de qué formas podría evitarse o cómo podría uno actuar ante la situación.
La Flaca es, en resumen, un relato que equilibra entre matices descarnados y anecdóticos, que cuenta con una narrativa fresca y cautivante. Es una historia en la que la narradora nos cuenta sus vivencias de modo tan detallado y personal, que nos hace parte de ellas. Pronto nos sentimos cual familiar cercano, un amigo… o, por qué no, un compañero de aventuras.
Desde mi perspectiva, en un libro que todos deberíamos leer para acercarnos más a nuestra historia, y una lectura básica para todo estudiante de periodismo. Mediante sus memorias, Patsy aprovecha también, para darnos un par de lecciones básicas sobre cómo investigar de verdad, sobre cómo marcar la diferencia.
